Farmer’s Daughters play an important role in the daily input of farm life. They hold a special place in their hearts for their beloved animals and the growing crops. This week we are starting something different and featuring not only young farmers, but the farmer’s daughter. Meet Mackenzie Felt from Felt Farms in Adel, IA!
Felt farms originated as a dairy farm but has since changed to a thriving row crop and cattle feed lot operation. “I consider myself lucky to have gotten to grow up on a farm and extremely lucky to say I have gotten to work aside my dad from the time I could walk,” quotes Mackenzie. At a very young age, my responsibilities started out as simple tasks such as holding gates and making sure the water tanks were not freezing over. Now at 21 years old, the jobs have grown to spreading cattle manure and assisting with planting and harvest operations. My dad, David, has taught me many things about agriculture over the years including how to pick out a sick calf in a lot of 300 head.Growing up, my parents always encouraged me to participate in 4H and FFA activities. I am so thankful that they pushed me to always do my best at fairs or any cattle show we attended because it expanded my agriculture world in a way that I could have never imagined at that point in my life. It is because of 4H and FFA that I am writing my own voice in the agriculture world and I can’t wait to see where it takes me in life!
I am currently a junior at the University of Central Missouri double majoring in Agriculture Science and Media Broadcast. With my degrees I hope to one day read the farm report on the radio or even broadcast for RFD-TV or any major Ag event/program. Getting this degree is important to me because I want to teach people about the positives of all types of agriculture.
